About 4 years ago we had the opportunity to work with a very special piece of wood. Normally, American Workshop is a place where you can come and work on YOUR projects, but we do build some custom pieces sometimes.
This project was for an individual who wanted a new dining room table. But this isn’t your typical dining room table. This one is created using a slab of Bubinga. Bubinga is COOL! If you want to learn more about it, I highly recommend check out the Wood Database.
The slab was directly shipped from Africa and cost well into the thousands. The slab came with a live edge, but the owner didn’t want it, so our first step was to cut off the edges and make it a true rectangle. Have you ever cut into a slab of wood that costs more than your vehicle? It’s terrifying! Not only is it scary, but it’s tough. Bubinga is very dense, and so we had to cut very carefully with a very sharp blade so that the edge wouldn’t get burned because they were going to be showing.
After squaring up the top we moved on to the legs. The legs of the table are made of walnut and as you can see, they are curved. Before we began cutting the legs, we first made them out of insulation fiber just so we had the right dimensions. Once we had the legs right, we cut them out of the walnut and added a steel plate under the table top for added support.
We put the two pieces together and BOOM, a beautiful bubinga table…that weighed a ton! The slab itself took 4 guys to lift and I believe the whole table took over 6! I cannot remember what type of finish was put on the table, but I know we put many many coats on.
